Είναι γνωστό ότι οι περισσότεροι γονείς -ιδίως οι μαμάδες- χάνουν λιγότερο ή περισσότερο τον ύπνο τους μετά τη γέννηση ενός παιδιού, κυρίως του πρώτου τους. Μια νέα βρετανο-γερμανική επιστημονική έρευνα δείχνει ότι αυτή η διαταραχή του ύπνου φθάνει στο αποκορύφωμά της τους πρώτους τρεις μήνες μετά τη γέννα, αλλά μπορεί να διαρκέσει έως έξι χρόνια.

Οι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον αναπληρωτή καθηγητή Σακάρι Λέμολα του Τμήματος Ψυχολογίας του βρετανικού Πανεπιστημίου του Γουόρικ, που έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο περιοδικό για θέματα ύπνου «Sleep», μελέτησαν τις συνήθειες ύπνου 4.659 νέων γονιών, οι οποίοι κλήθηκαν να βαθμολογήσουν από μηδέν έως δέκα τη διάρκεια και την ποιότητα του ύπνου τους πριν και μετά το παιδί (πρώτο, δεύτερο ή τρίτο).

Διαπιστώθηκε ότι, κατά μέσο όρο, το πρώτο τρίμηνο μετά τη γέννηση του μωρού οι μητέρες κοιμούνται μια ώρα λιγότερο από ό,τι πριν αποκτήσουν παιδί, ενώ οι πατέρες 15 λεπτά λιγότερο. Μέσα στο πρώτο έτος, η απώλεια του ύπνου για μια γυναίκα είναι περίπου 40 λεπτά κάθε βράδυ.

Έξι χρόνια αργότερα, οι μαμάδες κοιμούνται 20 λεπτά λιγότερα, ενώ οι μπαμπάδες συνεχίζουν να κοιμούνται 15 λεπτά λιγότερο, με άλλα λόγια η κατάσταση έχει βελτιωθεί για τις γυναίκες, αλλά και οι δύο γονείς δεν έχουν επανέλθει στα επίπεδα ύπνου προτού κάνουν παιδί.

Αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι μπορεί πια το παιδί να μην κλαίει μέσα στη νύχτα όσο μεγαλώνει, όμως δεν παύει να ξυπνά βραδιάτικα, να αρρωσταίνει, να έχει εφιάλτες και γενικώς να έχει ανάγκες που κρατούν ξύπνιους τους γονείς. Η μείωση του ύπνου είναι πιο αισθητή στο ζευγάρι που αποκτά το πρώτο του παιδί.

Οι γυναίκες κατά μέσο όρο ανέφεραν μια μείωση της ποιότητας και ικανοποίησής τους από τον ύπνο τους της τάξης των 1,7 μονάδων μετά το πρώτο παιδί (στην κλίμακα 0-10), ενώ μετά το δεύτερο και τρίτο παιδί η μείωση ήταν μικρότερη, περίπου μία μονάδα.

«Οι γυναίκες τείνουν να βιώνουν περισσότερη διαταραχή του ύπνου τους από ό,τι οι άνδρες μετά τη γέννηση του παιδιού, κάτι που οφείλεται στο ότι οι μητέρες έχουν πιο συχνά τη βασική φροντίδα του παιδιού» ανέφερε ο δρ Λέμολα.

Το ύψος του εισοδήματος των γονιών και άλλοι ψυχολογικοί ή κοινωνικοί παράγοντες δεν φαίνεται να παίζουν ιδιαίτερο ρόλο και να προστατεύουν τον ύπνο των νέων γονιών.
